MightWeb is a small web hosting company that was founded by Marcus Frolander in January of 2015. I’ve been on a Starter package since May of 2016. In August of 2016 MightWeb merged with ImbaHost and went from being a one-man operation to a team of at least five. Some things that have really stood out for me with MightWeb are their transparency and high standards for quality of service.

Since I’ve been using MightWeb, my hosting account has been through two server migrations. I was originally on the s103-carrier server and then was moved to the s104-carrier server, both in Carrier-1 facility in Dallas, TX (migration was completed on 1-27-2017 with zero downtime). I’m currently on s101-cdc603 server in their new location at the NCDC603 facility in Chicago, Illinois (server migration completed on 06-25-2017 with no issues).

On top of always informing customers of any planned maintenance well in advance, MightWeb also sends out “Reason for Outage” emails whenever there has been any unplanned downtime/issues. Sometimes the details are outlined in an PDF attachment,here’s an example from 2-20-17. The client area shows the current status of servers, any past incidents that have been resolved, as well as any future scheduled maintenance (https://mightweb.net/status/). They also send out newsletters usually on a monthly basis with reflections/insights, recent improvements that have been made, and highlights of any upcoming changes.

Speed Testing – Fast Load Time

As mentioned above, I’m currently on a server located in Chicago, IL. Here’s a speed test from the Pingdom Dallas, TX location. Less than a second (963 milliseconds) load time for a 2.1 MB homepage is fast.

Hosting Plans

MightWeb provides shared hosting, reseller hosting, VPS (Linux and Windows), and dedicated servers. The shared hosting “Starter package” I’m on allows for hosting 2 websites and 1 MySQL database. I found it odd at signup that this plan offers an add-on domain but no option for an additional MySQL database. I debated between the Starter and Advanced packages but ended up opting for the Starter plan despite the useless add-on domain since I don’t have any static sites and just considered it a single domain plan.

There were some long instances of downtime last year that were mostly due to planned maintenance. MightWeb ended up issuing a refund for a full year of service in September because of not meeting their uptime standards. More recently their uptime has been significantly better.

On September 12th, 2016 after 3 hours of downtime that day the owner Marcus issued a full refund for a year of service.

Marcus: We are getting in touch with you as we’ve unfortunately noticed that we’ve failed to maintain our uptime guarantee for the past three months. We strive to maintain a high level of service, but a chain of unfortunate events have resulted in our network not being as stable as it normally is.

As a result of this, and as a result of your uptime not being up to par with what we expect from ourselves, we are hereby issuing a full refund of your services. Your services will remain active of course – so see this as our way of apologizing for the recent issues. Rest assured that we are working diligently to resolve them.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

I felt that a full year’s refund wasn’t called for…

Me: I really appreciate the refund, thank you. I would like to go over the statement “we’ve failed to maintain our uptime guarantee for the past three months”.

From my records I had less than 20 minutes of downtime in August.

The downtime in July (around 4 hours) was on July 6th which I believe was related to planned maintenance on a switch.

September (around 3 hours).

At the most two months of hosting account credits for July ($2.59) and Sept ($2.59) would have been sufficient enough for your uptime guarantee. Thank you for going well above and beyond any SLA but if you’d like to do the hosting account credits instead please let me know.

I hope the network issues are resolved moving forward and thanks again.

Marcus: Our monitoring (SrvTrack) measured a server-wide uptime of 99.86% during August as a total. Granted we have it set fairly strict where it generally accounts for downtime on the second consecutive connection failure – but I’d still dare to say the uptime was less than our guaranteed 99.9%.

As for the other two occasions – whilst one was planned, the total downtime for these two events are in my book enough to warrant a proper refund. That is especially considering that they were in such a short proximity to one another. As I mentioned – we set high standards for what we should provide both in terms of support and uptime. When we fail either, it only makes sense that you are properly credited for it.

There is no need to deposit anything in terms of account credit – simply consider this my (and our) sincere apology for failing to hold up to our guarantees. I assure you we’re working out solutions in co-ordination with the data center to get back on track, and prevent these issues.

Final Verdict

In the year and some change that I’ve been a customer of MightWeb it is clear to me that they won’t settle for anything but perfection. If things don’t go as intended they own up and provide open and transparent communication with their customers with well thought out procedural actions to fix any issues with prevention in mind. The times where things have gone awry they have disclosed in full detail what caused any failure whether on their end or by providers they have entrusted within their infrastructure. The founder of MightWeb, Marcus, truly cares about the satisfaction of customers. If you are looking for an honest web hosting provider with top notch performance and proficient and friendly support MightWeb is definitely worth your consideration.

GeekStorage was founded in 2007 by Jay Higdon and Matthew Eli. I’ve been on a shared plan with them since November 2015. They also provide reseller hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated servers. With 10 years under their belts in this business GeekStorage has remained a small company but they have also continuously upgraded to newer/better hardware throughout. In the two years that I’ve been with them all in all things have gone smoothly.

Offering “Unlimited Hosting” Plans Now

GeekStorage recently decided to offer “unlimited hosting” plans along with their older “limited hosting” plans. I like that they still offer the older plans too. Many other web hosts have added unlimited plans in recent years and kept their original plans (e.g. MDDHosting, StableHost, HawkHost).

The fact that they do list the limits of the unlimited plans is good, regardless of the contradiction of the term unlimited.

GeekStorage Unlimited Resource Limits

The original shared hosting plan I signed up for in November 2015 was called “Basic Hosting” and it was setup on the Goliath server. In March 2016 I was migrated to an improved server called Poseidon and the plan I’m on now is called PX-1.

It has plenty of resources allocated. In fact, it’s better than the resource limits on the newer unlimited plans (see resources from my cPanel below).

Speed Test Results

I got decent loading speeds from San Jose, California on the Pingdom Speed Test. The Poseidon shared server I’m on is located in Chicago, IL.

Other than a few downtimes here and there, plus the announced migration of my hosting account to a new server that went smoothly, my two years with GeekStorage has been mostly uneventful. This generally is a good thing when it comes to web hosting. I’m not that surprised since they have mostly positive feedback on WebHostingTalk. I’m going to renew my hosting plan once again at the end of the month. I’ll update this space if anything changes and I’d say give GeekStorage a go if you have been considering them.

MIT Technology Review’s list of the is filled with companies selling cloud services, using cloud services, or supporting cloud services.

There are bio-tech, fintech and VR companies, but even many of them make use of cloud technology to develop or deliver their products and services. The list is topped by Nvidia, not because of its share of chips for video games, but because its chips also lead the AI market, and are used by “all the major Internet and cloud-service providers.”

Among cloud service providers on the list, most have other lines of business, but their status among MIT’s 50 Smartest Companies is generally more to do with cloud and services based on it than their original profit drivers, such as retail (Amazon) or personal computers (Microsoft, IBM).

Below are the 7 top-ranked cloud companies on the list:

1. Amazon

Ranking: 3

AI technologies, most notably Alexa but including many others, puts Amazon near the top of the list. Software developers have now published 12,000 programs for Alexa. AWS is , with doubled profit and a 55 percent increase in sales in 2016.

2. Alphabet

Ranking: 5

AI is also one of the key areas for Alphabet and its subsidiaries, and Google Cloud Platform is not explicitly referred to in the company summary. Alphabet achieves a 40 percent saving in data center cooling energy use from applying DeepMind machine-learning algorithms, according to MIT Technology Review.

3.Tencent

Ranking: 8

Tencent opened a earlier this year to support its pursuit of market share growth in US cloud services. The Review says half of the 770 million daily users of the company’s WeChat use the service for 90 minutes or more each day.

4.Microsoft

Ranking: 27

While it gets credit for reviving its consumer products business and its quantum computing research, Microsoft is recognized by the Review as smart for growing its cloud business to reduce its reliance on PC sales and increase its margins. The company’s commercial cloud revenue is projected to reach $15 billion.

As Rackspace CFO, Alterman is responsible for shaping the company’s financial and investment strategies to accelerate growth and profitability. Head-London Connectivity “Not Spots” Limiting City Competitiveness: Report

The city of London faces a threat to its productivity and competitiveness from poor connectivity, including “not spots,” “digital deserts,” and a lack of fiber connections, according to the London Assembly Regeneration Committee’s report on (PDF) in the city.

The report is drawn from evidence collected from local residents, businesses, local authorities, and internet service providers, and sets out priorities for the London mayor’s digital strategy and the Chief Digital Officer the city intends to add.

The continued connectivity problems in London are particularly frustrating given the .

London lags behind other U.K. cities such as York, Coventry and Edinburgh for internet coverage and speed, according to the report, and ranked 26 out of 33 European capital cities for average download broadband speed in 2014. The report calls broadband the “fourth utility,” and points out that most London residents and businesses are served by “fibre to the cabinet” with the “last mile” of service delivered over old copper wire.

It also references a 2016 study by Thinkbroadband which shows that while some areas of the U.K. have relatively high percentages of customers covered by ultra-fast broadband, London ranked 30th out of 63 cities in the U.K. with 77.4 percent coverage, while the national average is a mere 51.4 percent. Similarly, while areas of no or very low mobile connectivity are usually rural, certain areas of London are such “not spots” due to factors like infrastructure limitations and building height. Less than three-quarters of London has 4G coverage.

“The Mayor has planning policies aimed at reducing the inequality and exclusion experienced by sections of Londoners, such as Policy 3.2 in the London Plan on improving health and addressing health inequalities,” the report authors concluded. “The policy states that ‘boroughs should work with key partners to identify and address significant health issues facing their area and monitor policies and interventions for their impact on reducing health inequalities.’ The committee recommends the Mayor uses the London Plan in the same way to encourage boroughs to address digital exclusion.”

The report also provides a priority checklist for the incoming CDO, which includes supporting digital skills development, as well as bureaucratic and infrastructure-access issues. It recommends several measures to tackle digital exclusion, and identifies areas for public sector intervention following the 2014 assessment by the City of London Corporation that “big telecom” had failed to deliver the necessary solutions.

Head-IDC: Spending on Non-Cloud IT Infrastructure Continues Decline in 2017

IT budgets will continue to favor cloud deployments over non-cloud IT infrastructure throughout 2017, according to new numbers released this week by IDC, which indicate that worldwide spending on traditional IT infrastructure will decline 4.6 percent in 2017.

According to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Cloud IT Infrastructure Tracker, released Wednesday, total spending on IT infrastructure products for deployment in cloud environments is set to increase 12.4 percent year over year in 2017 to $40.1 billion. By 2020, overall spending on cloud IT infrastructure will surpass spending on non-cloud IT infrastructure.

While spending on public cloud data centers will grow at the fastest rate year over year, ahead of private cloud deployments, IDC said on-premise private clouds will still account for 62.2 percent of spending on private cloud IT infrastructure, growing 9.6 percent year over year in 2017.

“The overall profile of spending on IT infrastructure in various deployment/location scenarios seen in 2016 will continue in 2017 with some differences in specific technology segments,” Natalya Yezhkova, research director, Enterprise Storage said in a statement. “Enterprise adoption of hybrid and multi-cloud IT strategies and the proliferation of cloud-native applications and areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), which embrace a cloud-first approach to supporting IT resources, will fuel further increases in end-user spending on services-based IT. In turn, this move will be reflected in a shift of the overall spending on IT infrastructure from on-premises to off-premises deployments and from traditional IT to cloud IT.”

Public cloud data center spending will account for 60.7 percent of overall spending, and will grow at 13.8 percent year over year, while off-premises private cloud environments will represent 14.9 percent of overall spending, growing 11.9 percent year over year.

Ethernet switches will be the fastest growing technology segment; growing 25.8 percent year over year in 2017, as spending on enterprise storage grows 12 percent, ahead of spending on servers, which will grow 9.1 percent.

Earlier this year, Gartner noted that while , political uncertainty in global markets fostered a “wait-and-see approach causing many enterprises to forestall IT investments.”

It’s not necessarily big news when web-based companies such as LinkedIn contribute to open source. In fact, it’s also only natural. Many of today’s web giants began building their infrastructure using open source as the backbone, so releasing code developed in-house as they scale comes naturally. Facebook has open sourced much of the code it’s developed, and was the impetus behind the Open Compute Project to “open” data center designs. Google’s many contributions to open source projects are well known, and Yahoo has open sourced many of the products it developed — including its early work on what is now called Hadoop.

Even companies not normally associated with openness are major contributors. Walmart open sourced its DevOps platform, OneOps, as well as Electrode, the React-based application that runs its e-commerce site. Then there’s Microsoft, once open source’s mortal enemy but which now frequently releases new open source code — and is one of the largest contributors to Linux.

LinkedIn, which Microsoft has owned since December, has also contributed to open source. Its latest offerings, and should prove to quickly become mainstays in IT departments, unless I miss my guess.

The two projects, announced as open source on June 29, are designed to work together like a single application, much like an automobile engine and transmission.

Iris is an automated way to deal with incident escalation — whenever anything happens in a system that somebody should know about, Iris will make the call. It’s highly configurable through a UI and has been battle tested by LinkedIn under heavy load for two years. It’s ready for prime time production.

“One of the more surprising features of an Iris plan is that no specific modes of contact are specified anywhere,” Daniel Wang, a on Thursday. “Instead, we define priorities, from low to urgent, and allow users to map contact modes to these priorities. This gives our users a high level of flexibility in defining how they wish to be contacted. One person may prefer to receive Slack messages rather than email, while another may opt for SMS, and Iris is fully able to support these preferences.”

Although Iris qualifies as a “backend” application, Oncall can be seen as a backend to Iris. It’s how Iris determines who’s on-call for a team it needs to contact during an incident.

“Oncall comes with built-in support for follow-the-sun schedules, and provides a clean UI for swapping, editing, and deleting events,” Wang explained. “It supports a number of different event types, and has built-in shortcuts for overriding an existing shift, should the need arise for a substitution. It acts as a specialized calendar of sorts, making management of on-call schedules fast, clean, and painless.”

Since Oncall’s primary purpose is to work hand-in-hand with Iris, why is it designed as a separate application?

“One of the advantages of having Oncall as a separate service is the ability to provide teams with an on-call scheduling tool without necessarily tying in escalation. For example, many IT teams at LinkedIn don’t own critical applications, but instead use Oncall to define a first point of contact for the team. In these cases, Iris’ escalation plan definitions aren’t needed, and teams can use Oncall alone as a specialized calendar.”

Both Iris and Oncall are released under the GPL compatable Simplified BSD License (2-clause) license.

Head-China Is Said to Close Major Hole in its Great Internet Firewall

(Bloomberg) — China’s government has told telecommunications carriers to block individuals’ access to virtual private networks by Feb. 1, people familiar with the matter said, thereby shutting a major window to the global internet.

Beijing has ordered state-run telecommunications firms, which include China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, to bar people from using VPNs, services that skirt censorship restrictions by routing web traffic abroad, the people said, asking not to be identified talking about private government directives.

The clampdown will shutter one of the main ways in which people both local and foreign still manage to access the global, unfiltered web on a daily basis. China has one of the world’s most restrictive internet regimes, tightly policed by a coterie of government regulators intent on suppressing dissent to preserve social stability. In keeping with President Xi Jinping’s “cyber sovereignty” campaign, the government now appears to be cracking down on loopholes around the Great Firewall, a system that blocks information sources from Twitter and Facebook to news websites such as the New York Times and others.

While VPNs are widely used by businesses and individuals to view banned websites, the technology operates in a legal gray area. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology pledged in January to step up enforcement against unauthorized VPNs, and warned corporations to confine such services to internal use. At least one popular network operator said it had run afoul of the authorities: GreenVPN notified users it would halt service from July 1 after “receiving a notice from regulatory departments.” It didn’t elaborate on the notice.

It’s unclear how the new directive may affect multinationals operating within the country, which already have to contend with a Cybersecurity Law that imposes stringent requirements on the transfer of data and may give Beijing unprecedented access to their technology. Companies operating on Chinese soil will be able to employ leased lines to access the international web but must register their usage of such services for the record, the people familiar with the matter said.

“This seems to impact individuals” most immediately, said Jake Parker, Beijing-based vice president of the US-China Business Council. “VPNs are incredibly important for companies trying to access global services outside of China,” he said.

“In the past, any effort to cut off internal corporate VPNs has been enough to make a company think about closing or reducing operations in China. It’s that big a deal,” he added.

China Mobile Ltd., the Hong Kong-listed arm of the country’s biggest carrier, declined to comment. Representatives for publicly traded China Telecom Corp. and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. couldn’t immediately comment. The ministry didn’t immediately reply to an email seeking comment.
